An undescriptive tall young man, with a sparkle in his glance. Started making growing a small pointy beard on his chin. Wears comfortable clothes: traveller's pants, shirt, often a cloak. Always brings a notebook with a pencil.
Rather jolly character.
Who am I? Well, I wish I had to tell special stories of wondrous origins and unusual powers, but... unfortunately (or fortunately) that's not the case. My family was dignified but not rich, and I grew up like a normal boy. Except... except that I always had a curiosity. Inquisitive nature, I started early to ask around the nature of the things. And when people couldn't answer, I was trying to look at it by myself. Probably my father would have preferred for me a normal life with a tranquil job and family, but it became clear soon that I wanted -I had- to be a scholar. Investigating, understanding, gathering knowledge. And this is what I did indeed. I can get lost in a library looking out books and reading, but I also want more. This is why I travel: I have to face the Real and test the thing that I learned and the theories that I have concocted. The thing is, in the course of my studies I discovered what really attracts me. This thing is Time. This is why I will dedicate my life in unclosing the secrets of Time, and the power inside it.
This page is chaotic. From chaos everything comes out. Order will act later.
The usual image of Time as a river is misleading. One usually pictures in his mind a large river full of water, that flows calmly and regularly. Time is indeed a river, but full of sudden turns, rocks that barely come out from the water, whirlpools and eddies, irregular currents. This is the difference between linearity and non-linearity.
The Circle of Time. I do not believe that Time is circular. People usually confuse periodicity with circularity. The existence of periodical phenomena just point out the possibility of measuring Time, not its cyclic nature.
The Wheel of Time. Another misleading image. The wheel of time does not only turn (time is circular) but it rolls instead.
Direction of Time. Does an "arrow of time" exist? We experiment it in common life. An arrow seems to be quite a fragile thing (after all, an arrow can be reversed), but our experience tells otherwise. An arrow implies asymmetry. A power that allows to act on the arrow must exist. Purpose: find this power.
Vision of Future, Past, and Present Future Perhaps a bit misused expression, but quite fitting in my opinion. Future is an array of probabilities. Like threads that depart from one point (the Present), multiple futures exist, and get defined only when they become present (futures are wavefunctions? hmm, better leave out the scientific jargon for now, come back to the parallelism with quantum mechanics later). Of course the global future is made up by the composition of the probabilities of each individual future (of persons, animals, trees, but also buildings, locations). Also of course, some threads are thicker than others, which means that some futures are more probable than others. With the right skills or talents, probabilities can be seen. A good fortune-teller can see the most probable future for one person, regarding one or more specific topics. A seer or prophet is able to see the global probability threads with a broader angle. The aim of a Time Master is not only to see, but to be able to manipulate the threads of the Future.
Past Retaining the analogy of the Future, the Past can be considered as defined by an unique thread. Things in the past, by definition, have already happened: delineate the current state, and determine the probabilities of the threads of the Future. However, the thread of the Past is blurred, the more blurred the more going backwards in Time. Even the most perfect recording of the Past leaves out gray areas. Going backward in Time enough, the blurring is so strong that History becomes Legend. A consequence is that, if a person travels into the Past, makes the Past become less unfocused (from the Present point of view) just with the very act of observing. Perhaps Time travel in the past is a way of stabilizing the Past itself? And what are the consequences of a reduction of the blurring of the Past? In theory, there should be no consequences. Reality has been already defined, seeing it with more clarity should just allow a greater awareness of the observer (the traveler), without bigger fallout. Something to be investigated.
Present The Present is the defining moment. Here and now probability becomes reality. Who knows, perhaps the final power of a Time Master is actually to control the Present...
Entropy - Syntropy - Time: These concepts are related in their deep essence. The Arrow is a common image between all of them. Looking for a Big Synthesis.
Individual emotions do not belong to the River of Time. Even the strongest ones produce only insignificant ripples in the water, which proceeds untouched. The Path of Time calls for the detachment from individual emotions. This doesn't mean that History is devoid of emotions. These are the so-called Spirit of the Time, the global state of mind of a particular epoch. Can the Spirits of a Time be used as marks of an Epoch? Can be used as anchors? or polar stars as reference orientation inside History?
Note: Someone (thanks, Ceridwins!) made me notice told that individual emotions count in history, because strong feelings (hatred, fear, etc.) propagate from one person to another. The basic idea is that these feelings resonate and then can imbue the persons, eventually creating "Great Men" (this doesn't have necessarily a positive connotation, just means men that leave their trace in History: in our world we can think of Hitler or Pol Pot, but also Gandhi, or Mandela). I thought about this. Indeed it's true that strong emotions can create Great Men. I believe, though, that these are rare exceptions. Looking at the big scale, we can compare individual emotions as a sort of white noise: fluctuations exist but they are undistinguishable. An efferate murder can create a wave of sensation in the country or in the world, but usually the effect is reabsorbed. Inside the noise some trends can be traced (the above mentioned Spirits of Time). However, some signals (some emotions) can stick out of the undefined white noise and they can influence the surroundings in the long-term, if persistend and supported by an iron will.
Time Travel and Paradoxes. The existence of temporal Paradoxes are intimately connected with the fabric of reality. Until it is not clear how reality is made, only hypotheses can be made. I perceive Paradoxes as reality singularities. The classic case-study is the killing of his own grandfather before he can conceive your father. On singularities the normal laws falter and something happens. One possibility is that Paradoxes do not exist. How? The easiest solution is that something happens in the instant immediately before the paradox: as soon as you are going to kill your grandfather, reality ripples, energy is released, and you find yourself back to present (or everywhen, but far from the paradox). This is a very blatant way for reality to treat paradoxes. Reality can work instead on the principle of the minimum effort. Creating mundane obstacles in order to stop you killing your grandfather, even changing person. Everything is done inside the structure of reality so there are not evident events like the case before, but I wonder if really reality is sufficiently aware of taking care of these small details. The opposite case is that the singularity happens and evolves in a destructive way. The paradox effectively happens and reality breaks off. The intensity of the disruption cannot be determined at this stage of knowledge. If this scenario is actually the real one, reality is weaker then I'd expect.
Final Aim: Mastering of Time
Refining phase: learning to build rituals
- Berseker's Riddle solved
- Second step: to enter in a wondrous place... but looks quite complicated.
General
objective: gathering knowledge about Time in this world. I have to look
for not-so-public knowledge, this means I have to explore private
places.

surrounding it and set on candelabras mounted to the walls. Syrian nods and departs, leaving Valldore in
the flickering light. Raising his golden
