In this land of turmoil and loneliness, hate is a luxury we can ill afford but, is easily found.
We of the Children teach unity and community through our open hearts and services to the greater community. By these teachings we hope to close the schisms that divide our lands and peoples.
A parable of unity found in the roots of hatred:
A young man stood atop a hill with his flock of goats grazing idly. On a hill not too far distant he saw another tending their goats. The other hill looked more lush and the man imagined himself to see the other goats fattening over the season they grazed, but he dared not make the journey to see for himself as he feared loosing his flock amongst the strangers. As the season progressed the man came to believe that he hated the other for their good fortune and his hate consumed him, and his flock declined, but he did not notice so consumed of his hatred was he.
On the other hill a young woman tended her flock with love and kindness. One fine day she chanced to look out across the land and saw the other who nurtured a flock on a near distant hill. Her heart went out to him as his hill did not appear so lush as her own, but her father had warned her to distrust strangers, so she did nothing. As the season passed she noticed his flock dwindling and her heart was torn with compassion for his plight until she could stand it no longer. She called her sister to watch the flock while she went an invited the other to join her on the fine pastures.
The young man saw the distant herder begin their journey toward him and he hardened his heart with hatred toward them. With each step closer his heart grew more black and cruel. The journey took many days and still his flock dwindled without his care. But he was consumed in the approach of the other herder.
As the young woman journeyed with her trusted hound, her heart swelled with compassion as she watched the flock dwindle before her eyes and she quickened her pace.
During the others journey the young man neither ate or slept, such was his all consuming hate for the other and his body began to waste. His flock was now half its number, but he cared not.
The woman took the most direct route to the other herder, but the final approach hid her from his view.
The young man scanned the horizon for sign of the other that he might assault them unawares, but his body betrayed him because of his lack of care. Then, it was as if the full moon on a soft summer evening shone upon him, and hatred was washed from him as the young woman approached, such was her compassion for him when she saw his emaciated state.
The young woman tended him and her hound gathered what was left of his flock. When he was restored enough, she invited him to share her pastures, and that he might know his from hers she tied a ribbon made from her skirts to each goat's horns. Such was her true feeling that he accepted and visited with her in her pastures and his herd prospered.
The history of Karak and Meru
Meru's Telling:
Our love had been forged so strongly it attracted the attention of the Gods. It infuriated them since they could not create it and neither could they control it. They weighed our love on the Scales of Thoth and the final judgment was our love had outweighed any which had ever existed. They condemned it for interfering with the balance of the universe. It was then decided we should be separated to opposite ends of the universe. However there was a redeeming condition to this punishment. It was deemed if our love was so great as the scales had shown we would remember in another life and our love would call us to each other. If we found each other this would be the proof of the divinity of our love binding us together as one forever. But I leap ahead, let me begin at the start.
In those times I was a mere maiden and you were a brave hunter. I was shy, quiet, and introverted then. You were brave, bold, and incorrigible. One day I was picking flowers in the field and you were hunting, this time it would not be the game, which caught your eye. From then on I believe I was the one you began hunting in the fields. You watched me every chance available and from every angle. I continued about my business, never paying any mind to you until I returned to pick flowers, bent down, looked up and there you were. Startled and recognizing your presence I could only stare up at you. Still staring into each others eyes you took my hand and gently lifted me up, it was love at first sight. From that time on we spent night and day together and our love would grow stronger and stronger with each passing moment.
I would watch you hunt, we would spend the day reading together in the grass, and swimming in the lake, but the most special moments we spent together were gazing at the stars and anticipating the light of the moon.Your spirit had entered my heart and soul consuming me. We involved each other in our interests closely working together forging and bonding our love in all of our endeavors. Reading and writing I could not take my eyes away from you and moments when you held me or corrected my form while teaching me to use a bow my mind was concentrated on you while my body performed the action.
Every evening when I returned home I smiled to myself thinking of you enveloped in the warmth you had brought to my heart. How I loved you more every moment we spent together, my heart beating faster in anticipation of your arrival and my soul aching to be with you at your departure. In time we became inseparable and our love would be solidified and forged like a precious metal. I recall the heralding of the time, which would change our destiny forever.
One evening after returning home I left again to go to the sacred spiral mound to seek knowledge from the sky. The stars spoke of a wonderful blessed event and then a tragic event, which would follow. Shortly after I would receive the blessing of my parents for my hand to you in marriage. My happiness echoed throughout the universe as now I could truly be bonded with you in every way possible.
Our wedding would be sacred, the Goddess had smiled, radiating her light upon us. There was silence except those sacred words which bound us together even beyond death and the sacred garments, which displayed the grandeur of how sanctified the event was.
Unbeknownst to us we became respected members of our village. We merely did what we thought was right, later becoming influential members of the village participating in negotiations with other villages and making decisions for our own village.
I only remember meeting with medicine men of the village and later being transported before the Gods where I could not tell reality from dreams if indeed they were separate. It was then I recalled the star's revelation of a tragic event.
I wept at our judgment and showered the heavens with my tears. From my tears stars were born. You took my hands into yours, looked into my eyes, and said, “Have faith in our love for no mortal or immortal possesses love like ours.” To comfort me you arranged the stars in your image and said, “When you have forgotten look to the sky and remember me.” It would be the last night we lie together. The next day we would awaken to new lives not having any memory of one another.
