Character

Combat stats tap a row for its sources

  • 50.03 initial = 50.03

The plain force your creatures strike with when you send them into a ritual.

Treasure from won fights, where it is the cheapest of the nine to raise. Worn weapons lend it, and some shop and reward items grant it.

Damage is your attack less the target's defence, and most abilities start their sum from it. Your total is shared out across the creatures in your ritual, so the same attack goes further in a ritual of two than in a ritual of six.

  • 21.89 initial = 21.89

How much of a blow your creatures shrug off before it touches their vitality.

Treasure from won fights, at three and a half times the cost of attack. Worn armour lends it, and some shop and reward items grant it.

It is subtracted from nearly every incoming blow, so a defence above the enemy's attack leaves them doing the minimum of one damage. Like the rest, your total is shared out across the creatures in your ritual.

  • 19.85 initial = 19.85

The strength behind everything your creatures do that is not a plain blow.

Treasure from won fights, the second cheapest of the nine to raise. Worn gear lends it, and some shop and reward items grant it.

Healing, protecting, stealing life and poisoning all measure themselves against power and ignore attack entirely. Stealing life is capped at 20 percent of a creature, and an aimed hit at 25.

  • 11.14 initial = 11.14

How early your creatures move when a round opens.

Treasure from won fights, at five times the cost of attack. Worn gear lends it, and some shop and reward items grant it.

The whole field acts in order of initiative, highest first, so it decides whether you land a killing blow before the other side answers or after.

  • 15.57 initial = 15.57

How readily the realm's heat answers to you, in a fight and on the road.

Treasure from won fights, and one of the dearer of the nine. Worn gear lends it, and some shop and reward items grant it.

It is added to the heat you get for a fight you start, and a quarter of it is added to the heat of every step on your own land, or on any land while you belong to none.

  • 11.05 initial = 11.05

The realm's willingness to tilt a moment your way, or against you.

Treasure from won fights, but only on about one win in eight, so it grows in jumps rather than steadily. Clickables in the lands hand it out, and worn gear lends it.

On roughly one scene in three, luck finds you Winertia; luck below zero loses it instead. In a fight, luck on either side can double an effect or cancel it outright.

  • 8.68 initial = 8.68

How readily your vitality comes back to you.

Treasure from won fights, and by far the dearest of the nine to raise. Worn gear lends it, and some shop and reward items grant it.

It swells the vitality your house pays you on every refresh, by up to half again, with half of that reached at 2,000. After a fight, every creature you sent is brought back up to at least its regeneration as a percentage of its maximum vitality. Your regeneration is shared out among them like the other stats.

  • 18.07 initial = 18.07

Your nose for a price, and how hard you are to overcharge.

Treasure from won fights, at one of the higher costs of the nine. Worn gear lends it.

It takes up to 25 percent off a dwelling, a weapon and your house rent. The discount climbs fast at first and then flattens, reaching half its maximum at 750 and never quite the whole 25. It is the one of the nine the fight engine never reads.

  • 23.71 initial = 23.71

How well you hold together while crossing land that is not yours.

Treasure from won fights, at one of the higher costs of the nine. Worn helms and shields lend it.

Stepping into another house's territory costs you vitality, and your energetic immunity cancels that percentage of the loss. At 100 the crossing costs nothing at all.

Skills that only grow

  • nothing yet = 0.00

The weight of your own will, built by going where the realm pushes back.

Every scene you enter that costs action points. Going in above the viscosity minimum pays more than going in below it. The secured day streak pays as well.

Your share of a forge wish. There are five bands, from a tenth to a half.

  • 80 initial = 80.00

How far your character can still be reshaped. It starts at 80 for everyone and is only ever spent.

Nothing raises it yet. Every card you take by converting permanent stats lowers it by one.

The price of your next card. At 80 a card costs 10 points; each point of plasticity you lose makes the next card dearer (59, then 69, then 81 ...), and each point above 80 makes it cheaper, down to a floor of one.

Due to my overriding alliance with the Balance, I find myself unable to accept Alliance Offers.

It is a great pity, but I dare nothing that would interfere with my purpose here.

Born in 2765 N.A., I was named Mainnalle D’Ashkera and spent my childhood much as any other child. As I look back, such peace and happiness was mine that I can scarcely credit it…and I lived it.

But the day after I turned fourteen, my parents died, and my mother’s father, Rainspinner D’Keither, took me as his apprentice. I became Mainnalle, of House Keither, but of Clan D’Ashkera – born as one and dedicated to the other.

In the second year of my apprenticeship, I tripped in Grandpa’s workroom, fell, and put my hand through his Spirit Level – his device for measuring the Balance of our world – and changed my soul’s life thread for all eternity.

I lost my senses for three days. During that time, I discovered that I could read the Planetary Balance – every time I opened my eyes.

I could now monitor the Balance without effort, and interpret what needed to be done to ensure its workings.

Thus I found myself Guardian of the Universal Balance, for when the Balance is off, the pain is excruciating. And the greater the imBalance, the worse the pain.

When I am required to fix the Balance, I disappear from my current location, and re-appear in my new one. There I stay, doing what I can, until the Balance is righted.

  • I have traversed a thousand worlds, and the endless depths of space.
  • I have crossed a million seas, and a thousand swamps and deserts.
  • I have birthed heroes, and empowered villains.
  • I have raised tyrants, and crushed rebellions.
  • I have rescued strangers, and betrayed friends.
  • I have established colonies, and ruined empires.
  • I have murdered innocents, and banished kings.
  • I have destroyed wizards, and succoured monsters.
  • I have raised temples, and toppled fortresses.
  • I have corrupted saints and maddened geniuses.
  • I have rescued planets and snuffed out stars.

And I would – and probably will – do it all again. The Balance must be maintained, and I am Maintenance. I do this because I must, I once tried to deny the Balance; and through my willfulness, caused the death of a star – and four hundred billion souls.

So, I do what I can. I will always, given a choice, bring joy rather than sorrow, peace instead of pain. But that choice is not always mine. I am possessed by a power capable of toppling Gods, and its purpose is undeniable.

Yet through limited choices, and many unavoidable, dubious actions, I carry the guilt of countless innocents on my soul. Lives ruined, hearts broken, bodies bloodied, spirits warped – and countless innocents dead at my hands.

Thus, I take my pleasure in the little things. A butterfly on a flower, a sunny afternoon, the majesty of a palace, the serenity of a temple; a picnic by the river or a moment spent laughing with friends. All these, I store in my heart, and all the good actions along with them, to set against the evil I have done and maintain hope.

I am the Guardian of the Balance of the Universe. And my gift to all is Hope.

The little details that make the person

Glancing up from the tome in my lap, I smile and beckon you to sit in front of the fire. A frank and open discussion upon every topic imaginable follows and you realise my interest is in everything and everyone. You explain your opinion, and I explain mine, without rancor. You discover that here is someone who has seen so much, and interacted with so many that her world-view is very tolerant. She makes you realise that there is always room for another opinion, and each has its own validity.

Upon wandering into the kitchen of the Root of the Matter Inn, the first thing you see is me bending over the stove.  I set the pot to simmer and turn to smile at you... Upon inquiry you discover a person who enjoys food.  choosing it, preparing it, cooking it, eating it, experimenting with it... All these are cause for pleasure.  And if you ask, I will prepare whatever you wish, although I will confess that my muffins are not as good as Firsanthalus'.

Let's have a picnic....I smile...and produce a large covered basket from my pocket.  I wander over to a patch of green grass and set up lunch.  Over the next several hours, you realise that this lady enjoys the simple things...

          • fresh bread spread with butter
          • a butterfly on a flower
          • a friendly duck
          • lying on the grass watching the clouds
          • a vigorous game of tag with the children
          • and sitting under a tree with a good book

You stand at the foot of the stairs leading to the Root of the Matter Inn, and just as you place your foot on the lowest step, a small, pretty woman in an evident fury comes storming down them. Not being a fool, you step back to allow her past you, and watch as she paces swiftly up and down, growling, gesticulating and muttering imprecations under her breath.  As she calms down, you realise that this seemingly kind and cheerful person has a considerable temper... and a sharp, acidic tongue when riled. As you interpret her muttering, you realise that tolerant of differing world-views she may be, but she clearly has small tolerance for self-indulgent pity.

ATTENTION: mcvitie is now an enemy of THE SISTERHOOD.  Has accosted Windy in her pub for trying to protect new member, Lady Tygara.  Has attacked all 41 of us in doing so.

RECANT: DING DONG THE WITCH IS DEAD! (If she comes back to life, yet again, we do not know her.)

 LoreRoot Alliance Statement:

Windy is a strong advocate for the ways of Loreroot.  She will defend her HOMELAND and all it stands for with her life if needed.  Trees are life and therefore will be guarded and defended with extreme predjudice.  There will be NO EXCEPTIONS.

Okay, having gone through that - I do not believe such a space should be devoted solely to things I don't like..

Therefore, I shall share with you some things I have learnt as I have matured...

  • I've learnt that you can't make someone love you. All you can do is stalk them and hope they panic and give in... (age 23)
  • I've learnt that you can't hide broccoli in a glass of milk... (age 5)
  • I've learnt that comparing yourself to others is a waste of time - They are all more screwed up than you would believe possible... (age 26)
  • I've learnt that some luxuries e.g. pedicures are worth the cost... (age 16)
  • I've learnt that the people who aren't locked up in an asylum have managed to hide their insanity from the psychiatrists be afraid - be very afraid... (age 19)
  • I've learnt that sometimes, complete strangers will do something nice for you, and expect you to pass it on and not back...(age 28)
  • I've learnt that whenever I lose my purse - someone will find it and give it back to me - intact strange, but true... (age 22) Please Note: Nothing has happened in the more than a decade since to change my opinion.
  • I've learnt that just because you know where you are, it doesn't mean you're not lost... (age 9)
  • I've learnt that some things are just not worth arguing about... (age 17)
  • I've learnt that no matter how bad, bleak or depressingly rotten life is - it could always be worse... (age 24)
  • And - this one is the most important - I've learnt that the people who really count, won't stop loving you, even when you don't love yourself... (age 25)

From the Adventure Log

Page 567 · One Man, Many voices

Aia stood in front of the old man, summoning her creatures to fight and struck the first blow. Like plushies during Murmas the blows rained down on the old man, others joining in with the call. As planned, blood was let during the festival but the shades has no idea it would be against their mouthpiece. The old man fell and the last bindings to humanity withered away, he was dead, and they were weakened.
